Explainer on District 1 Elections

On June 2nd, there will be two ballots

Are you confused about District 1 elections? You are not alone.

On June 2nd, there will be two ballots.

The first ballot will be a primary election to fill the vacancy in the presently existing District 1 created by the death of Doug LaMalfa. (This does not include Lake County). Presently, the candidates are Audrey Denney, Mike McGuire, James Gallagher, James Salegui and Angelita Valles. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, there will be a general election between the two top vote getters on August 4th and the winner will take office for the balance of the current term that ends in January.

Also on June 2nd, there will be a second ballot for a primary election to fill the new District 1 seat created by Prop 50. This one DOES include a large portion of Lake County The candidates are Audrey Denney, Janice Kerman, Mike McGuire, James Gallagher, Timothy Sean Kelly and Richard T. Minner. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, there will be a runoff between the top two vote getters in the general election on November 3rd. The winner of that election will take office in January for a full two-year term.
