Lake County is Critical to the Success of the Prop 50 Strategy

Congratulations to all for the passage this month of California Prop 50, a measure designed to counter a move by Texas Republicans (at the direction of President Trump) to re-design its congressional district map with the goal of winning five additional house seats in the 2026 mid-term elections. We at Indivisible Lake County were strong supporters of Prop 50 as a necessary California countermeasure.

Although we are a non-partisan organization, the Indivisible Lake County leadership team strongly believes that returning the House of Representatives to Democratic control in 2026 will be essential to countering the fascist, authoritarian direction of the Trump Administration.

We in Lake County will have a disproportionate and central role in the success of the Prop 50 strategy in the next election. The northern two thirds of Lake County will now be part of a re-structured Congressional District 1, a seat held since 2013 by Doug Lamalfa, an ultra-conservative, Trump-supporting Republican from the Northeastern part of the state.

This seat is one of the five hopeful Democratic pick-ups behind the Prop 50 strategy. And Lake County will be counted on to help flip this seat by coming out in force to support a qualified Democratic challenger. Excellent Democratic challengers are emerging, and we will keep you informed as we approach the upcoming primaries.

Also as part of the Prop 50 re-alignment, the southern third of Lake County remains in the District 4, a seat held by our long-term and extremely effective Democratic congressman Mike Thompson. The Prop 50 strategy projects that Mike will hold this seat, but the price of potentially picking up the LaMalfa seat is that Mike’s new district is now more vulnerable to a Republican challenger. Mike has always had strong support in Lake County, but it will be critical that we put extra effort this year into his re-election.
