Prop 50 NYT Letter to the Editor

Recently, our very own Gary Maes submitted a letter to the editor of the New York Times on the topic of Proposition 50 --in response to "Do not Re-Gerrymander California" by Charles T. Munger Jr's guest opinion essay of Sept 3rd. . Gary's letter was published in the NYT on September 10!

Here it is reprinted below.

To the Editor:

We recently received our first mailing telling us to vote “no” on Proposition 50,

the redistricting initiative in California. The mailing was paid for by Charles T.

Munger Jr., the author of “Do Not Re-Gerrymander California.”

Proposition 50, unofficially known as the Election Rigging Response Act, will

level the playing field. It is temporary by design and expires in 2030.

I applaud Mr. Munger’s earlier efforts to ensure fair redistricting in California.

However, in 2025 we face a crisis in our democracy. Californians need to respond

and make sure Congress is representative of the will of the voters across the

nation

What Congress really needs to do is pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and

make equitable redistricting the law everywhere.

Gary Maes
